The project team had its second annual meeting in October, 2016, at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Beijing. The meeting focused initially on discussing the advances of each research group and individuals to provide an accurate report to the funding agencies: FAPESP (Brazil), NERC (United Kingdom) and NSF (U.S.). Then, the meeting followed the points and comments raised by the External Advisory Board (EAB), two days before. Some important aspects about the Belmont Forum and about the project itself were highlighted. It was recognized that the Belmont Forum is more focused on science than stakeholder engagement per se, despite the linkages with the Future Earth initiative.
Attention was called to the research questions. The need of regular virtual meetings among team members was reinforced, particularly regarding model development, fieldwork and data analysis. Different model approaches were mentioned to deal with the telecoupled system of soybean production and trade between Brazil, the U.S., and China. The need for collaboration among researches was highlighted.
